Prompt: Throughout this module, we explored the legacy of the Enlightenment in constructing new forms and modes of identity. In particular, I focused heavily on the Enlightenment “tools” for dividing the world into hardened types. In particular, we looked closely at race and gender as two key factors in producing new categories of identity that, in turn, were used to justify who counts as citizens, i.e., “the people,” in the modern context.
With all this in mind, please respond to the following prompt: how did race and gender affect developments in identity and citizenship from the late-18th to the late-19th centuries?
Remember:
You must employ a roughly 50/50 balance of evidence from the course lectures and assigned readings!!!
Directions: In 1,350-1,800 words, please respond to the prompt below. Your answer should employ a roughly 50/50 balance between evidence from the course lectures and the assigned readings. This Critical Analysis is assessing your ability to analyze the material from only module 1 (i.e. weeks 1-4). Outside materials are not allowed.
In your answer, you should include evidence from multiple lectures and readings in order to demonstrate fluency with the overall questions and frameworks of the module. Your answer must be formatted in 12-point Times New Roman double-spaced formatting.
In terms of citation, you are not required to cite course lectures. You do, however, need to include an in-text parenthetical citation when you reference the assigned readings, either in the form of a direct quotation or paraphrasing. The in-text citation should include the author’s last name and the relevant page number, i.e. (Morgan 3). If there is no listed author, use the first two or three words of the title instead, i.e. (Popul Vuh, 4). Please submit your document as a .docx or .pdf file (no .pages!!!)
