Description
please cite your answers using the page numbers of the reading. Do NOT use any outside sources please.
Answers should be in 400-500 words? Not including the question itself.
I will post the questions and the reading in pdf form. I couldn’t fit the readings in one file, so I have them in separate ones.

Please refer specifically to the course readings in
your answers, but in doing so, avoid including too
many long direct quotations in your responses.
1. According to Giovanni Boccaccio, what are
the coping mechanisms against the Black
Death in Western Europe? Also, what
features (if any) do you find similar between
Decameron’s depiction of the 1348
epidemic and the current pandemic?
2. In Chaucer’s “Wife of Bath’s Tale” and in the
Introduction to the First Day of Boccaccio’s
Decameron, we find a tension between a
very negative, even misogynistic, view of
women and a defense of women as strong
and capable. Even though these texts were
written by men, do you think they were
intended to defend women against anti-
feminist accusations?
3. Dante’s hell is described with beautiful
poetry, and it contains many striking images
that make it a pleasure to read. As a reader
of the Inferno, how do you react to this
balance of the horrible and the beautiful? Is
this tension or balance something we might
find in late medieval society in general?
