Consider “folk wisdom” that you have encountered in regards to raising children. Would you consider this “wisdom” to be accurate or not? In your response, reflect upon these perceptions that are considered to be true in regard to child development. Reflect upon possible misconceptions and perceptual biases (yours or another person) that may be held in regards to that childhood topic or “folk wisdom” about childhood. Example Response of folk wisdom I’ve encountered:
“The apple does not fall far from the tree”(Use another example in your response).
A saying that was taught within my family was that “the apple does not fall far from the tree,” meaning that children will grow up to be like their parents. I do not think this “wisdom” encapsulates other factors that impact a child’s development, nor does this always hold true due to differences in personality. Also, usually, this saying is in a negative connotation in relation to poor behavior and does not consider other environmental aspects that impact a child’s social-emotional or cognitive development throughout their lifespan.
