Investing in Your Social Capital
Capital consists of material and resources that are possessed by an individual or organization and make it possible to
produce something else of further value. For instance, capital could be funds that are invested to generate a return, an
inventory of items that may be sold, and/or the facilities and equipment the organization uses to produce something.
Generally, the more capital that one possesses, the greater the potential value.
There is a different form of capital that can be as valuable as the type of capital described above. Social capital consists of
the network of relationships and contacts that one has, as well as the information that is produced from that network. One
component of social capital is sort of like your contact list, which represents the people you know and, in many cases,
evidence of how you know them–as a family member, colleague, or important client. Another element of social capital is
the information resources that you possess and share among your network of contacts. If you are the person who is
known to help your friends and family members with technology problems, your expertise is something that your contacts
value very highly!
Most people recognize how a professional online profile is a form of social capital. It provides others with information
about you (education, experience, qualifications) that give you an identity and, when relevant, could make you an asset for
an organization. However, many opportunities are missed because of the assumption that once a profile is created, the
work to create social capital is done. The reality is that, to maximize the return on social capital, one has to make
continued investments by seeking and sharing information with others to further expand and share knowledge as well as
maintain and develop relationships.
Assignment Process and Getting Started
Create a Social Media Profile
First, you will either create or update a LinkedIn profile that contains relevant information about education,
experience, and key skills. To join LinkedIn and create a profile, go to: https://www.linkedin.com/ You will need
to take a screen shot of your profile, copy this onto a word file, and submit this to the course drop box. Screen

Join the Class LinkedIn Group
At the beginning of class, you must join the LinkedIn group that was set up for the course. The link for the group
is located at: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/8560245/ After you have created your LinkedIn profile, join the
group by following this link and then clicking the yellow “Join” button:
Be aware that after you join, there may be a delay before your request is approved. For this reason, please join the
group immediately as completion of this assignment is necessary to advance to unit materials and exams.
Assignment and Instructions
For each unit in the course, you are required to post an article related to each unit. For example, in unit 1, we
discuss the communication process, the self-concept, and perception. Your assignment is to search and find an
article related to a concept found in this unit and post it to the course LinkedIn site. Your post will include a short
comment (2/3 sentences) briefly explaining why the article is of interest to you.
You will then respond to at least one of the other existing articles found on the course LinkedIn site. The
comments that you post may take a variety of forms, but usually consist of comments on the article itself or
responses to other students who have posted in the discussion thread. All comments posted to the discussion must
be at least four sentences (approx. 60 words) long.
Because the information that you contribute represents your social capital, articles need to be professional, and
comments need to be polished and professional as well.
After you have posted your article and comment to LinkedIn, you will need to take a screenshot of the article you
posted, and a screen shot of your response to someone else’s article and save this to a Word document (for
instructions about taking a screenshot with your operating system, see: http://www.take-a-screenshot.org/). Once
you have taken the screenshot, position it within the Word document. Then, save the file.
All text posted to the LinkedIn discussions as well as the screenshot should be saved in a Word document and
uploaded to the course/assignment drop box. You will only receive credit for this assignment if you post the
article and response to the LinkedIn group AND ALSO upload your initial article and comment screenshot to the
appropriate assignment area on Canvas by the absolute deadline.
You are encouraged (but not required) to comment on multiple articles found on the site. If you post once to get
credit and then you notice another interesting article about a different topic, it is definitely okay to comment. By
doing so, you are further increasing your amount of social capital!
Duplicates are not allowed. Make sure the article you wish to post is not already posted on the group site.
You will need to post both article and response to receive credit for the assignment.
You will need to post both article and response to the drop box for access to the unit test.
Grading for this assignment is based upon the following criteria:
Adherence to assignment guidelines (e.g., posting to the forum and dropbox prior to the designated deadlines,
uploading the document in the proper format, etc.)
Professionalism of the contribution
Quality of the contribution (on topic, sufficient explanation, spelling, grammar)
Be aware that for you to move on to the next unit of quizzes, you need to post (article and response) and submit to
the drop box.
You must post an article and response to another article for full credit. Failure to do so will result in a grade of “0”
Each post and response are worth 5 points for an overall total of 20 points toward your final grade.
Although there are several ways to search for articles, the following sites may be helpful. This is by no means an
exhaustive list, but you may find several articles of interest.
