Communication-Target Audience, Delivery, and Content
Social and Behavioral Aspects of Health (F6) Competency
This competency focuses on how the actions of an individual, group, or organization can influence the
management of the health of an individual or population (Valenta et al., 2018).
Social determinants are socioeconomic status, education, community, physical environment,
employment, social support, access to health care, population health, housing, behavioral health, health
literacy, and patient empowerment (Valenta, et al., 2018, Artiga & Hinton, 2018).
The following skills and knowledge expertise are needed to meet this competency:
-patient engagement, patient education, health literacy, patient portals, patient-reported outcomes,
social and behavioral health
-data analysis to identify disparities, trends, needs, performance, surveillance, population trends,
utilization
-interprofessional engagement, team health care delivery models, accountable care models, patientcentered care, team-based care, value-based health care, workflows, utilization of healthcare
-policies and regulations for patient safety, outcomes, evidence-based guidelines, quality improvement,
key performance indicators
-use of health information technology, communications, collaborative models (HIE, patient portals,
online tools, monitoring), patient handoffs, the transition of care, process improvement
Communication, Profiling the Audience, Customizing the Communication
A health informatician interacts with many disciplines, vendors, external customers, internal customers,
and patients. Your audience’s time is valuable. Your communication gives the audience the first
impression of your credibility, professionalism, subject matter expertise, and consideration of their time.
It sets the professional relationship, immediately and the audience decides if they want to further invest
any time in the value of your proposition.
Business writing is more formal, purposeful, focused, clear, and concise.
Why are you writing, what is it about, when will it be sent, and who is the audience? How will you
change the tone and content based on the audience?
With this in mind, a writing process is a good guide. The 3×3 process is a systematic method to plan,
draft and edit any type of written communication (Guffey, 2018).
Customize the communication to address the following:
-Who? -audience type, background, knowledge, characteristics, relationship
-presenter, author of the communication, others involved?
-What? – What is the message, information, knowledge, you want to convey? Persuasive or Informative
or a combination of both.
-How? –digital, virtual, in person, email, report, summary, survey, audio, visual, translator, language
tone, style, and level How do I access it?
-When? –set the expectation for the audience’s time investment and planning. E.g. starts at what time?
To what time?
-Where? -location, in-person, digital/virtual by audio, audio/visual, Zoom, Webex, Google Meetings,
Blackboard Collaborate, Instant Messenger, etc.
Initial Post and Discussion
The initial post is the email agenda and then the discussion objectives are to compare and contrast the
differences in communication elements between a professional and patient audience.
Some elements are similar- subject, time, agenda format, etc.—some are different- language, tone,
style, agenda content, explanation of benefits, proxy attendees, vision, hearing, cognition, etc.
When you develop your assignment, consider the following:
-Did you provide the audience with enough information to persuade them to attend? What’s in it for
me? What is my role?
-Did you provide the audience with enough information to know what to expect? What is a patient
portal? Why am I receiving this invitation? Time frame, subject, options for time, place, and access?
-Does the audience have the capacity or technology skills to access a virtual meeting? Is there an
alternative option?
The agenda, sent in advance, covers the following:
-subject, date, place of meeting or online, virtual meeting info
-start time and end time—how much time will I invest in this meeting?
-topic, description, order of priority, presenters
-time allotment for each agenda item
-any preparation required (Guffey, 2018, p. 52-54)
-Did you include an RSVP? Is attendance sufficient or should the meeting be canceled?
Remember to use the 3×3 systematic writing process and draw upon your knowledge from previous
units.
