History 585
First Argument Essay
Due at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday February 8
(Your TA will tell you how to submit your essay)
Considering information from course lectures and readings through the Tuesday February 1 lecture, “Early Women’s Game,”
as well as the material covered in our first two document workshop discussions (especially The Secret Game), please write an
essay that answers the following question:
In the first half-century (or so) of the game’s existence, to what extent was basketball a means for
liberation for Black Americans?
As you begin to formulate your answer and think about the term “liberation,” you may find it helpful to
read over the two main course questions that are posed on page one of the syllabus. To paraphrase: How
have different groups of Americans used this American cultural product—basketball—as a means for selfdefinition, integration, assimilation, economic mobility, resistance, and political protest; and how have
different groups of Americans used the game to influence ideas about race—particularly “Blackness” and
“Whiteness”—in our society?
An outstanding essay will (1) have a clear and forceful argument in your opening paragraph in
which you explicitly answer the above question; (2) will support and develop that argument by using
evidence and examples drawn from lectures and course readings (see more below); (3) will very clearly
explain what you mean by “liberation”; and (4) will only explore the eras already discussed in class—
that is, do not talk about the recent past or present (you will get that opportunity in later essays).
EVIDENCE REQUIREMENT: As one of the skills of the historian is interpreting documents and
using them as evidence for their claims, in this paper you must explicitly reference at least three of the
readings (primary or secondary sources) assigned so far this semester. That said, a more compelling essay will
likely use more than three.
By “explicitly reference” we DO NOT mean that you should throw a quote into your prose and let it
speak for itself. By “explicitly reference” we DO mean that you need to introduce the quote or
information that you are using and, once you have provided that information, explain how it bolsters your
argument.
One of the (at least) three documents that you reference must be The Secret Game. You should
consider The Secret Game a “main text” for your essay, meaning we want to see evidence in your essay that
you have read the entire book and have considered how the stories in the book can you help you answer
the question we have posed.
Formatting Guidelines: Your essay should be 4-6 pages in length (an essay shorter than four full
pages is too short; an essay longer than six full pages is too long). The essay must be typed, double-spaced,
use 12-point font (we suggest Times New Roman), and have one-inch margins.
In the upper-left corner of the first page your essay, include three single-spaced lines with: (1) your
name; (2) the class number (HIST 585); and (3) the date you are turning in the essay.
Give your essay a title—though no title pages please.
Make sure your essay has page numbers and then staple your pages together! “Stapled” means
stapled—no paperclips or folded edges!
At the end of your essay, please type the words “Honor Code” and then print your name (please note
that you are bound by the UNC Honor Code whether you do this or not).
Please use Chicago/Turabian style footnotes in your essay. There is a Footnote Guide on the
course Sakai “Resources” page to help you with the formatting. If you have questions beyond that, please
come and see me or your Teaching Assistant (note that you do not need to footnote information that
comes from lecture).
Also on the Sakai “Resources” page is a two-page writing guide, “How to Write a Compelling
History Essay.” We recommend that you review this guide no matter how many History essays you
have written. Again, if you have questions about this guide, please speak with one of the course
instructors.
WRITING ABOUT RACE: When writing about groups of people, it can sometimes be difficult to
know what language to use. To help with this, we have posted on Sakai a brief guide titled, “Writing
About Race.” We want this guide to helpful, so please consult this guide before writing your essay.
